Building Capacities of Prosecutor’s Offices for Conducting Financial Investigations of Commercial Crime and Other Similar Cases

    23.05.2019.

(Sarajevo, 25 May 2019) – Initial training of economic experts placed in prosecutors’ offices in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held between 15th and 24th May 2019 in Sarajevo. The training was organized by the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (hereafter the HJPC) within the project “Building an Effective and Citizen-friendly Judiciary” (IPA 2017), funded by the European Union.

Purpose of the initial training was to prepare economy experts for provision of assistance to prosecutors in the course of financial investigations in complex cases of commercial crime, organized crime and corruption. Presentation of practice of prosecutors’ offices and other relevant institutions participating in financial investigations was a part of this training.

Engagement of economy experts will make proactive approach in investigations and gathering of evidence easier and it will improve the quality of indictments by basing them on valid evidence. Experts will analyse specific financial documentation as a foundation for the prosecutors’ work on complex cases of corruption and organized crime, helping them to determine grounds of criminal offences in a more efficient manner.

Within this project, the HJPC engaged eleven economic experts to provide assistance in ten prosecutors’ offices throughout BiH during the next 24 months. This activity is based on recommendations of the European Commission and the Peer Review Mission on corruption and organized crime, including money laundering, which will result in improvement of quality of prosecutors’ decisions.

The Project “Building an Effective and Citizen-friendly Judiciary” is funded by the European Union in amount of 5,95 million Euro, implemented between 2018 – 2021, and is a part of larger support of the European Union to the justice sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
