The HJPC BiH: The map of court cases of public interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina is available to the public

    04.02.2025.

The map of court cases of public interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been available to the public since January, providing easy access to information on final war crimes and high-level corruption cases. With assistance from the European Union, the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPC BiH) created the map, which is a step in the direction of increasing the judicial system's transparency. The public can access the Map of Cases of Public Interest by the link: https://mapepredmeta.pravosudje.ba/.

The cases of public interest currently stored in the Map pertain to war crimes and high-level corruption cases. In the future, the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPC BiH) plans to include additional cases of public interest, such as environmental cases, hate crimes, attacks on journalists, and other matters that are under the spotlight of both domestic and international public attention.

By creating the Map and making it available to the public, the HJPC BiH seeks to promote transparency and accountability, thereby supporting the broader goal of strengthening democratic principles and the rule of law in the EU integration process. Continuous updating of the Map aims to foster greater public trust in the judicial system, ensure access to important legal information, and encourage a more effective and equitable administration of justice.

The Map provides an accessible platform for searching case decisions stored in line with the Guidelines for the publication of judicial and prosecutorial decisions, acts, and case information while carefully balancing the protection of private interests with the need for public access. Journalists, citizens, and other interested parties can easily search for summaries of court decisions using various criteria, such as keywords, case number, the court that issued the decision, case type, the perpetrator's role, and the location of the crime.

Also, in addition to providing summarized information on these cases, the Map makes it easier to obtain decisions from final and binding cases that are permanently kept in the central Court Decisions Database. Copying the case number from the map and inserting it into the relevant field in the Court Decisions Database is all that is required to search the database. The judicial and academic community, as well as Bosnian and Herzegovina citizens and case law researchers, greatly value this functionality, which makes it easier to access the full text of judgments, the only official source of information on committed and adjudicated criminal offenses.

Summaries are also available in English due to the significance of the war crimes and high-level corruption cases for both the domestic and international public.

The map of court cases of public interest was developed within the project "EU Support to BiH's Justice Reforms," which makes a significant contribution to improving the transparency of the judicial institutions work, as one of the important conditions for BiH's European path.

Within the Map, the updating of the Map of War Crimes Cases also continues, which was developed by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2014 and submitted to the HJPC of BiH in January 2019 for permanent updating.
